De opnamen dateren waarrschijnlijk van 31 januari 1950 en ze werden gemaakt in New York en ze hadden iets van een kerkdienst: Professor Johnson and his Gospel Singers. "Give me that old time religion" gaat over Daniël in de leeuwenkuil, dat verhaal staat in het oude testament, waarom er dan toch sprake is van Jezus begreep ik niet, die had toch niets met "old time religion" te maken. Op de achterkant van het hoesje geen enkel bericht over Johnson, enkel wat algemene informatie over gospel, dat aldus eindigt: "Professor Johnson and his Gospel singers give a condensed version of some of the gospel songs regularly used in the Negro churches,  slightly polished and pruned and rather more professional than we would probably find in most, but giving us a very good idea of the way the preacher builds up the excitement and the resulting fervour. It is an exciting record by any standards - religious or jazz."
