Kan het - nou ja - bij pussies en poodles nog altijd om huisdieren gaan, het wordt al lastiger wanneer  buttons en cabbages bezongen worden. Daar hebben we bijvoorbeeld medio jaren twintig Maggie Jones ("The Texas Nightingale"), die met begeleiding van Louis Armstrong en Fletcher Henderson zich afvraagt of iemand haar kool wil proberen: "Anybody here want to try my cabbage, Just step this way. Anybody here like to buy good cabbage, Just holler: "Hey!" There's no sweeter cabbage anywhere in town. You can have it boiled or smothered nice and brown. Anybody here want to try my cabbage, Just step this way." Lil Johnson (foto) nam hetzelfde nummer zo'n tien jaar later op, maar van haar komt ook dit "Press my button" met de suggestieve regels: "Come on baby, let's have some fun, Just put your hot dog in my bun".
