Soms wordt een mens afgeleid en dat is bij mij de laatste weken het geval: ik heb namelijk een Panhard PL17 gekocht en die leverde nogal wat problemen op. Al lagen die problemen minder bij de auto, ooit door de bekende autojournalist John Boster omschreven als “of all the French cars, certainly the most Gallic is the Panhard “, dan bij de vaderlandse ambtenarij, die in de veronderstelling verkeerde dat het subframenummer hetzelfde behoorde te zijn als het chassinummer. Maar goed, alle leed lijkt nu geleden en het wachten is op een Nederlands kenteken. Bolster schreef in 1961 over de PL17 nog meer: “For a start it has only two cylinders, but its flattwin engine is much more expensive to construct than the ‘small four’ of commerce. It has been chosen for two very good reasons, and the first of these is its entire lack of fuss. At high cruising speeds a little four-cylinder engine buzzes unashamedlly, which soon tires the passengers. Two big cylinders, beautifully balanced, give a restful cruising speed that fairly swallows the miles. Such a unit is also fundamentally efficient and has less friction than a ‘multi’. This means low fuel consumption, and that is something very close to the Frenchman’s heart”. Bolster haalde een topsnelheid van bijna 140km/u, gebruikte 1 liter benzine op 15 kilometer en dat alles uit een luchtgekoelde tweecylinder met een inhoud van 850cc. Ik ben benieuwd wat ik eruit haal.
