In 1870, eight month old Otho Scott had two older brothers: Frank, four years old and George, two years old. On November 16, 1886 the oldest of the two writes: "Dear Brother 'The only sound and healthy description of assisting is that which teaches independence and self exertion'. Gladstone Lovingly by Your Brother F. G. Scott.
Actually Gladstone said something different: "The only sound, healthy description of countenancing and assisting these institutions is that which teaches independence and self-exertion..." but it is not that important. What is important is the fact that the Scotts have disappeared from Chagrin Falls in the census of 1900. There is a new couple, Henry S. Scott (born in 1869) and Nella Scott (born in 1870). But Jenny, Frank, George and Otho are gone. Are they living in Knoxville, Tennessee because a Frank G. Scott, a bookkeeper lives there with his mother?

On October 22, 1886 Fred Gates only writes down his name and Chagrin Falls in Otho's album, but Fred is not traceable in the census of 1880. There are some families with the surname Gates, one is that of the 69 year old Achsa, born in Massachusetts, living with her 32 year old daughter Eliza. Another is the James M. Gates (42) family consisting of his wife Elnoria E. (39) and their children Elnoria B. (16), John (12), Frederick C. (9), Clemment L. (6) and Althea (4). The miller in Chagrin Falls is Washington Gates (51), and his wife Carrie M. (47), who hails originally from New York State. Living at home are two children, Elnora S. (22) and William (20), who is still attending school. Other occupants of the house are Washington's brother Henry (48) and Holsey M. (24), who is probably Washington's eldest son. He is married to Clara A. (22) an is a miller too.
When I look at the census of 1900 I have more luck: Fred Gates was born in 1871 and is married to Florien (1875). Their son Lawrence was born in 1893 and Fred must be Frederick C., son of James and Elnoria E. Gates in the census of 1880.

It must have been about 35 years ago that I started researching my grandmother's family on my father's side, which meant that I had to travel to Leeuwarden, Woerden and Apeldoorn. I also wrote to archives in Sneek, Bolsward, Franeker and Harlingen, but in some of these places I had to find somebody who could do the research for me. Now I am sitting for hours in front of a screen and a keyboard to trace the relations of Otho Scott in Chagrin Falls in 1886. It is physically a lot easier.
Lena B. Ober is the first one who glues a little card in Otho's album and she adds a couple of undecipherable initials in the margin. Otho will have understood, I don't. Lena is the second child of George H. Ober (1838-1903) and Martha Ober-Matthews (1842-1927). Lena has an older brother Archie M. Ober (1860-1950), who shows up in the census of 1880. In 1900 both children have disappeared, they don't live in Chagrin Falls anymore. Lena was born on September 22, 1869, marries a man with the name Woodburn and has been buried at the Oak Lane cemetary in Lake City, Florida.
Her parents found their resting place at the Evergreen Cemetary in Chargin Falls. Their home has been preserved and houses the museum of the Historical Society of Chagrin Falls. When I have finished my research on Otho's album it will go there. To my wife and me it seems the appropriate place to be.
