Nog een RAF-vliegtuig zonder naam in de Player's serie van vlak voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Een beetje een raadsel, want het is zeker geen "Firefly". Ik houd het op een prototype van de "Barracuda", die had namelijk, nadat eerst een Rolls-Roye "Vulture' 24-cylindermotor was geïnstalleerd, een 30-cylinder Rolls Royce "Merlin" (en later een 32-cylinder "Merlin"). Het enige probleem blijft de staart, die had een heel kenmerkende vorm, maar zo lees ik in Jane's: "The proto type Barracuda had an unbraced tailplane in-line with the top of the fuselage but in the production Barracuda 1 the tailplane was raised to its present position near the top of the fin clear of air disturbed by the wingflaps".

Op de achterzijde van het plaatje staat:
"This is a low-wing monplane, built by the Fairey Aviation Co. Ltd., and fitted with a Rolls-Royce "Merlin" engine. It has not yet be named. It is a two-seater aircraft with monocoque fuselage, metal-skinned wing and tail surface, and fabric-covered control surfaces. There is a retractable Oleo-pneumatic undercarriage. The wing span is 47 feet 4 inches. This aircraft is similar in construction to the Fairey "Battle", but is smaller in size and weight, and should therefore improve substantially on the "Battle's" performance.
